Our UK client purchased cutting edge technology from a European multinational aerospace manufacturing supplier, who was unfortunately unaware that UK building and utility standards were not identical to mainland Europe.

They contacted us for urgent assistance.

After many years of planning, trials & testing of the very latest industrial aerospace manufacturing technology, researched & developed in Scotland, using equipment from mainland Europe, with equipment accepted & “on the way” from Europe to the UK for installation, our client’s European multinational supplier suddenly informed them, “they were unfamiliar with UK building and utility standards”, having never installed any of their previous projects in the UK. The focus had been on the technology & research. Installation in a foreign country overlooked.

With only a few months before tens of millions of pounds worth of precision manufacturing equipment was due to arrive at our clients UK site, we were asked to help with an urgent solution.

Our initial gap analysis determined that the client’s supplier needed very significant electrical power supplies, significant combustion gas, large cleanrooms to Class 8 & 9, fire detection & prevention, emergency lighting, and production staff office accommodation, all within an empty building shell, within 7 months start to finish, to a fixed & challenging budget, to the highest standards possible.

Extracting & interpreting our clients new & imminent production equipment schedules & intended layouts, we quickly designed & developed the utilities & building services specifications required, complete with technical drawings & bills of quantity. We selected from our most significant and trusted supply chain, those large enough, resourced & skilled with years of experience in similarly challenging circumstances, to be able to achieve reliable high installation standards & compliance. We sent our designs for costing, working openly with our client, we selected the most competitive & deliverable offers for their required utilities: –

• 3 MW LV Switch Panel Primary Distribution for 50 circuits
• Final Circuit distribution for 250 points of connection
• 15 MW LV automated Emergency Critical Power Generation
• Exe ATEX rated mist fire suppression for high risk solvent storage
• High Precision VESDA aspirating Fire Detection for 100,000 m2 of production space
• UPS Emergency Lighting to ATEX confined spaces
• 50,000 m2 of FM Global spec Fire Sprinkler Protection
• 500 m2 of Cleanroom area to Class 8 & 9, +\- 1ºC & +\- 20% RH
• 200 kW Oil Free Air Compressors, Dryers, High Volume Storage & Distribution Network
• 100,000 m2 of general lighting lux level upgrade
• 5 MW natural gas distribution to 5 points of connection
• A production office to accommodate up to 20 office staff to modern office standards
• Bespoke Fire Corridor to comply with UK Building Standards and Escape requirement’s
• Full compliance with Local Building Control requirements
• F10 & CDM management for our chosen 20 specialist Building Services suppliers, Risk & Method assessment, Building Warrants & Completion Certification, Fire Risk & HAZOP Assessment’s complete with Latent Hazard Identification, Escape Planning & Protective Escape Corridor to UK Standards, all complete with Building Services Operating manuals

Fully documented & handed over, in budget, with four days to spare, before dignitaries, media & politicians arrived to cut the red ribbon. The production line has now been in full production for years, operating 24hrs a day, employing hundreds of local skilled staff, producing some of the worlds most advanced aerospace parts, fitted to many of the aircraft we might all fly with on holiday.
