• We carried out tests of the duty crane and gantry, measuring just how worn it had become. 
• Laser alignment tests of the structural gantry, 3D modelling any movement.
• Incremental full load laser deflection stress tests of the duty crane bridge, to 3D model the deflection.
• Real time video monitoring of any drive crabbing to identify and model the wheel & rail wear patterns 
• Then carried out the same tests and measurements of the standby crane, to ensure an improved performance would be achieved, and overhaul benchmark.
• Then the tricky part. Once we had agreed the standby crane could meet the demands of the production line, we started planning to swap the cranes over. We moved the standby crane to the position of the duty crane, the duty crane to standby ready for overhaul; on some of the widest span cranes of their type in Europe, during 24-hour production, without interrupting the clients business.
• The solution was to partially dismantle the duty crane, lower it level to the ground, drive the standby crane over to the production line, and then raise and reassemble the old duty crane now in the standby location. Giving space and time for its overhaul.

After weeks of planning and communication, we carried out the swap within 48 hours on site, during a regular production holiday. On their return, some production staff might not even have been aware of the swap. With the same crane type, and control, just more reliable than it was before the holiday.

Our competitors had suggested nothing could be done, or simply to purchase replacement cranes with a 12 months lead time, or even move the production line. Our novel solution saved our client the complexity of these “traditional” solutions, and the associated costs, lifting a weight from their minds without interrupting their routine production output.
