Precision Aerospace Machine Foundation
About this Project
After developing and procuring the very latest cutting edge non-destructive testing equipment available to the aerospace industry, from an EU supplier. Our client needed to understand and implement their machine suppliers very exacting requirements and ensure they were in place before the equipment arrived in the UK for installation.
- We first had to assist our client interpreting their suppliers’ requirements, for a very significant reinforced concrete foundation. 125m3 for stability & mechanical resistance under dynamic load.
- The foundation was required cured, painted & available for NDT installation within 10 months from enquiry, & constructed within a live 24 hour production line.
- The concrete needed some specialised engineering, for a flat and level surface, with minimal undulation, movement & shrinkage during cure to 0.1mm, ensuring NDT equipment consistency, without frequent need to adjustment for calibration.
- We developed our plan and proposal, interpreting the client’s supplier specification to effectively & efficiently deliver the foundation on time, budget & to the demanding specification required.
- We first created & chaired a CDM team, with all stakeholders involved, to record, implement and communicate all of the necessary construction works in advance.
- We commissioned a ground water survey to ensure the concrete & foundation design would tolerate any potential ground moisture.
- We commissioned one of our structural engineering consultants to design the principle reinforcing and provide general foundation layout construction drawings.
- We commissioned on of the UK most expert concrete specialists to design the exact concrete formation & chemistry, to ensure movement from shrinkage was the minimum technically possible.
- We tendered the civil engineering construction works to three of our competent expert suppliers.
- We developed the detailed construction method.
Without disturbing the 24 hour production line.
- We erected a scaffold within the building around the perimeter of the new foundation margins
- Sheeting the scaffolding with a fire rated fabric to create a semi hermetic barrier
- We opened the side of the building complete with temporary construction doors & ramps
- Saw cutting the existing floor into manageable sections allowed easy removal
- While excavating the 125m3 foundation with extraction we monitored for any airborne dust
- Delivered & installed very significant steel reinforcing, signed off by both consultants
- We then pumped the precision concrete to site for setting, levelling & resin painting
- With reversal we returned the building back to normal, complete with a new foundation
With the clients new NDT system making use of 7000 litres of fresh water on a routine basis, we also engineered & delivered the process water pump & storage system, complete with advice on how to achieve approval from Scottish Water & SEPA for compliant discharge to drain if required.
All complete on time, in budget, and to the highest standards possible, for such a large and precise concrete foundation.
